The Sword of Truth series follows Richard Cypher, a young woodsman intent on tracking down his father's murderer. His quest will take him far from home, embroiling him in an ancient war, three-millennia past, that is about to re-ignite with world-shattering violence.

Kahlan is missing. Worse than that – she's vanished, from the world, from memory, from the books of prophecy.

After being gravely injured in battle, Richard awakes to discover Kahlan has vanished... from the world, from memory and from the books of prophecy. To his disbelief, no one remembers the woman he is frantically trying to find – they refuse to believe she is anything more than a delusion born of his injuries.

Alone as never before, believed mad, stalked by a nightmare beast conjured by the Sisters of the Dark, Richard sets out to find the woman he loves more than life itself...

If she is still alive.

If she was ever real.

Chainfire Sword of Truth Book 10 eBook Terry Goodkind

I am a huge fan of Goodkind and this series. But in the last couple books culminating in Chainfire, the series has lost it's way. Im not sure if there are additional writers supporting him or if he's just gotten too busy to devote his full attention to these books, but they are no where near the first 6+ quality.

Specifically? 1/3rd of the book feels like rehashing old story lines, reeducating a new reader to the series and awkward historical summaries. Another third of the book are character monologues about vague and/or uninteresting philosophical ideals usually with Richard using some type of childish comparison to try to convince a group of people to see his way. Not to mention, the actions of the characters never truly reflect their growth into their roles, making the dialogues feel inconsistent and artificial. To top it off, after losing a defined antagonist, Goodkind has struggled to identify meaningful tension. The whole "Chainfire" premise is vague at best. The solution makes you suspend all belief and is certainly not up to his prior storytelling.

I don't enjoy writing this review, but sometimes writers need to quit when they are ahead and stop churning out drivel just to satisfy ambitious publishers.

Chainfire Sword of Truth Book 10 eBook Terry Goodkind Reviews

Let me start off by saying again I really do love the way he writes his books. He takes a rather simplistic approach to the stories using great ideas and vivid imagination to make his stories flow perfectly. His books are much easier to read and I sometimes say that he takes a "Write to kids" approach with his writing that makes the stories very easy to read and hard to put down. He is not like Tolkien, Jordan, or Martin in the respects of sometimes you have to carry around a notebook to keep track of all the players in his books. The one thing about his writing I probably don't like is the fact that he repeats himself alot. He will sometimes describe the same fact over 3 pages that he has already described in previous books assuming that you havent read it already in the earlier books you've read to getting to this one. The series Begins with the Wizards 1st Rule up until Chainfire it starts very simple and does get more complex as the story goes on. Some things are a bit predictable and sometimes you almost think that these people have got to be complete idiots in their way of thinking. All in all I am very happy that I was convinced by a friend to read this series, I would rank it in the top 5 story lines of all time (Jordan's wheel of time, Martin's Game of thrones, Paolini's Inheritance cycle, Tolkein's Lord of Rings)
Other than the complaints brought up didn't bother me as much as it did others. He is preachy but for some reason his preachiness dosn't bother me nearly as much as Jordan's constant male bashing,or three page descriptions of rooms never to be seen again and ponytail tugging. The plot is sluggish but again, did you read any of Jordan's middle and later books or George Martin's last two? This plot flies by in comparison. What really annoyed me no end is him spending pages hammering an idea or concept into your head over and over again until you had no choice but to skip past it. You don't have to tell me 7 different ways that Richard dosn't eat meat in the space of 2 pages. And as someone else mentioned, he really dosn't need to recap earlier books so thoroughly as he does.

Not a whole lot of action but I did enjoy the character interactions and he has a way of making me really feel good about certain actions characters occasionally have. I must admit that Richard seems to not listen to his own preachiness when he abandons all to find his lady. And he clearly stole from Thomas Covenant the way Richard can't master his powers. I think it would have been nice if he was more God like than he is by book 9. And maybe an author needs to be bold and stop the Lord of the Rings formula of breaking up the main characters and sending them on separate quests so much.

Oh and the main plot. I am of two minds of it. It's sort of annoying after awhile hearing how everyone thinks he's crazy. It seems EVERY chapter another thing comes up that is sure to prove Richard right. Only to make him look even more insane when it dosn't. I like the way that is building but in turn, enough already, we get it. Everyone thinks he's nuts. No one remembers but him. Stop banging it over our heads already.

All in all it's not a bad book. Just more of the same and cut out some of the unneeded words.
I would recommend reading this book primarily because it is the first book in the trilogy of chain fire. As with any long series of books, I have invested many hours into Richard and Kahlan. This many books and I am disappointment that Richard still does not have a clue on how to use the full potential of his gift. Yet again he is separated from the confessor. Some parts of this book drug on and on with Richard trying to convince everyone around him that he was not crazy. By now you would think they would take his word as gospel because he is the seeker and up to this point he has never been wrong. Will we ever get to see him fight as a true war wizard? Now he can't even use a little bit of the power of his gift because of an unknown creature will attack him if he does. Good God how about one book of him reeking havoc and destruction on the imperial order? Oh well I carry-on, Phantom here I come.
